Louisiana Ornithological Society 2017 Winter Meeting

Please join the Louisiana Ornithological Society (LOS) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Jan. 27- 29, 2017) in Baton Rouge, LA for the 2017 Winter Meeting. The entire meeting will highlight the role of the LSUMNS in ornithology and how scientists monitor birds; overall, it should be interesting and informative. On Friday (Jan. 27, 2017), registration will be held at the LSU Museum of Natural Science public exhibit area (located in Foster Hall on LSU’s campus) and desserts and coffee will be served. Promptly after, a brief welcome ceremony will occur, culminating in a guided tour of the Ornithology collection. Here, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the world famous bird research collection behind-the-scenes guided by museum faculty, staff, and students.

Most of Saturday (Jan. 28, 2017) will be dedicated to all-day field trips. Field trips will be led by LSUMNS personnel, LOS, LBRC, and BRAS members. Trips include going to the Morganza Spillway and the False River, hotspots around Baton Rouge (CBC stakeouts), local hummingbird gardens, and the Baton Rouge Audubon Banding Station at BlueBonnet Swamp Education Center.  After a day of field trips, a meeting a dinner will occur in the evening. The dinner will be catered by the LSU Club, and consist of either herb crusted chicken breast, apricot and ginger glazed salmon, or a vegetarian bean casserole. The program presentation titled “LSU Museum of Natural Science: World leader in discovery of new bird species” by Dr. J. V. Remsen will be given after dinner. Dr. J. V. The final day, Sunday (Jan. 29, 2017), guided field trips by LSUMNS personnel, LOS, LBRC, and BRAS members will continue. Trips include visiting the Lake Martin area, a behind-the-scene tour of the LSUMNS bird research collection, and additional locations based of what was and was not visited on Saturday. Finally, for an additional ticket fee, there will be an afternoon boat trip to look for Brown Boobies on Lake Pontchartrain.
