Conservation Education/Outreach Each Spring, in
collaboration with the National Wildlife Federation, LWF promotes National
Wildlife Week, bringing the message of conservation into
hundreds of classrooms around the state.
Louisiana WILDLIFE
Federation magazine
is LWF's quarterly journal of conservation news and features, informing,
entertaining and keeping members abreast of LWF activities.
Members can also sign
up to receive the LWF's electronic newsletter for later
breaking conservation news and information.
Conservation
Awards Now in its 4th decade, this program promotes
volunteer and professional excellence in conservation work through
recognition. Nominations are solicited from the public in 8 categories.
Recipients are selected by an independent panel of judges and honored at
a special banquet held in conjunction with the LWF's annual convention.
Nominations are open each October. A brochure
and nomination form
for the most recent program is available from the LWF office
(225/344-6707). Tips
for crafting a nomination and what
to include, as well as an example
of a winning nomination are posted on the LWF website. Read about the
most recent
conservation
award winners.
LWF Annual Convention The
Federation convenes a stimulating Annual
Meeting each year, providing a forum and opportunity for
LWF's local affiliate organizations and individual members to establish
policy and conservation objectives.
Legislation and
Rulemaking The LWF staff and volunteer leaders monitor
and evaluate proposals that come before the State Legislature and agency
rulemaking bodies that pertain to resource conservation and
environmental quality. In some years over 4,000 bills are introduced,
400 of which will bear on the interests of the Federation and its
members. These are carefully monitored so that LWF can provide an
up-to-the-minute status report to members, the media and other
interested parties. The Federation's Legislative
Report is the most comprehensive synopsis of legislation
pertaining to natural resources and the environment available. The full
text of all bills and resolutions introduced to the Louisiana
Legislature are available at www.legis.state.la.us.
Panels
and Task Forces LWF is called upon to participate on
numerous panels, task forces and committees pertaining to natural
resources and the quality of the environment. Among these are: the
Louisiana Oilfield Site Restoration Commission, Groundwater Management
Advisory Task Force, Habitat Advisory Panel of the Gulf of Mexico
Fisheries Management Council, Management Conference of the
Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, Louisiana Pesticide
Advisory Commission, White Lake Property Advisory Board, Saltwater
Recreational Fishing Advisory Task Force, Freshwater Recreational
Fishing Advisory Task Force, Hunting and Fishing Education Advisory
Council, Louisiana Reptile and Amphibian Task Force, and the Louisiana
Non-Indigenous Aquatic Species Advisory Task Force.
Habitat
Conservation/Outdoor Recreation LWF is the leading
advocate of habitat acquisition (from willing sellers) for refuges and
wildlife management areas with emphasis on filling habitat gaps in
travel corridors for black bears and migratory birds. The LWF was
recently successful in its effort to have the management of the
71,000-acre White Lake wildlife area transferred to the Louisiana
Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and is currently leading a campaign
for the establishment of the Caminada
Headland State Seashore on the Louisiana coast for
conservation and public recreation purposes.
